Perinatal Loss

Losing a baby though miscarriage, elective termination, stillbirth, childbirth, after a NICU stay, SIDS, or any other time is, without a doubt, one of the most difficult experiences a person will endure. It can result in a profound sense of isolation or the experience that your loss is misunderstood by others. There is no one right way to feel while moving through a perinatal loss. Grief is a normal process and includes a shifting of emotional experiences that may include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, among many others. These shifting states are not linear and often require support through healing.

Grief felt after a perinatal loss is not necessarily depression or anxiety, though it may lead to depression or anxiety. Regardless of your unique experience with grief, therapy provides a safe and secure place in which to understand the complicated feelings that are expected with loss. With the support of a trained therapist, the grief process can be integrated in a healthy and productive way.

Therapeutic methods such as supportive psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness-based psychotherapy have all been shown to help women and families who are struggling through the complicated grief associated with perinatal loss. Our skilled team will offer understanding, compassion, connection, and guidance as we assist you in your efforts to make meaning of your experience, and we will support you and your family in healing from loss.
